SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, MEXICO, October 14, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — On Nov. 1, the San Miguel de Allende hotel brings together chef Rodrigo Rivera-Río, artist Jesús Valenzuela and musician Coco Zaragoza for an evening devoted to memory, transformation and Mexican tradition.

On Sunday, Nov. 1, Hotel Matilda will mark the 15th edition of Cena Negra, its annual celebration of gastronomy, art and Mexican cultural traditions, with an immersive evening titled “Traditional Funerals.”

For 15 years, Cena Negra has explored the many ways Mexico understands death — not simply as an ending, but as a passage through which memory, ritual and identity endure. This year’s edition turns its attention to the space between presence and absence, where the physical disappears and the story remains.

The body fades. The story remains.

The evening’s visual narrative will be created by Mexican artist Jesús Valenzuela, a San Miguel de Allende–based visual and public artist known for his monumental street art, murals, and mastery of techniques such as Venetian mosaic. His work for Traditional Funerals draws on the rituals, symbolism, and visual language surrounding traditional Mexican funerals.

Rather than approaching death through the macabre, Cena Negra XV considers it through transformation, ritual, and remembrance — a distinctly Mexican sensibility in which the departed remain present through stories, customs, and collective memory.

A Culinary Interpretation by Rodrigo Rivera-Río

For its 15th edition, Cena Negra welcomes Rodrigo Rivera-Río, chef and founder of KOLI Cocina de Origen in Monterrey, as guest chef.

KOLI was awarded one MICHELIN Star in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide Mexico selection, recognizing the restaurant’s distinctive approach to the cuisine and culinary heritage of northeastern Mexico.

Born in Mexico City in 1983 and raised on an agricultural and cattle ranch in Hidalgo, Rivera-Río developed an early relationship with the land, its seasons and its ingredients. He later studied gastronomy at Instituto Culinario de México in Monterrey before founding KOLI in 2015 with his brothers, Daniel and Patricio.

At KOLI, the Rivera-Río brothers research and reinterpret the flavors, products and culinary traditions of northeastern Mexico. Their work is grounded in regional memory while embracing contemporary technique — an approach that resonates with this year’s Cena Negra, where inheritance, memory and transformation become central themes.

For Cena Negra XV, Rivera-Río’s cuisine will enter into dialogue with Valenzuela’s visual world, creating an evening in which the table becomes another form of storytelling.

An Evening of Art, Music and Remembrance

The experience will unfold through the combined language of food, art and music, with a live performance by Coco Zaragoza accompanying the evening.

At the heart of Cena Negra XV is an enduring question: What remains when presence becomes memory?

The answer is found not only in the rituals surrounding death, but in the things that survive it — a recipe, a story, an image, a song, a gesture passed from one generation to the next.

“Cena Negra has always been about more than a dinner,” said Bruce James, general manager of Hotel Matilda. “It is an opportunity to bring together artists, chefs, musicians and our guests to explore the traditions and stories that shape Mexico. For our 15th edition, we wanted to reflect on what remains after someone is gone — the memories, rituals and stories that continue to live on.”

Following 15 editions, Cena Negra has become a recurring moment in Hotel Matilda’s cultural calendar, inviting guests to experience Mexican tradition through a contemporary lens. This year’s edition continues that dialogue, bringing together the table, the gallery and the sounds of live music in an evening designed to honor both what is lost and what endures.

Cena Negra XV: Traditional Funerals will take place on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, at Hotel Matilda in San Miguel de Allende. The evening will be open to hotel guests and visitors, welcoming both returning guests and first-time attendees to experience this 15th-anniversary edition.
